Last weekend’s Western Canadian Championships and NorAm in Prince George came with cool nights and warm sunny afternoons for some great racing! Our junior racers competed in an interval start skate race on Friday, classic sprints on Saturday, and classic mass start distance races on Sunday. Racing in PG is always exciting, with steep ascents, fast technical descents, and on this weekend, very fast conditions.
Gareth dominated the Open Jr. Men division with gold medals all three days. We had several other podium finishes, including Gregor (on all three days!), Ian Mayer, and Ben. All three Juvenile Boys were together in the “B” final on Saturday, with Ian Williams dominating the heat. All of our athletes performed strongly through the weekend, making their coaches and parents very proud!
The team were all staying together in Prince George, making for fun evenings of recapping race highlights, strategies for the next day, and sharing meals and good conversation. Our senior athletes, David and Gareth, each took leadership roles in the team meetings providing advice and encouragement to our younger team members.
We are very fortunate in the BC Interior to have multiple high level competitions within driving distance. The experience that our kids receive by racing at the WCC and NorAm level competitions is invaluable, and well worth the drive to PG. Our next big competition is coming up in just over a week at the Olympic venue near Whistler. The BC Championships are a fantastic experience for our athletes to race with the best in the province and on the same courses as their Olympic heroes did under the Olympic rings! Don’t forget that the registration deadline is Sunday at midnight.
