Canadian Tire Fundraiser Notice

December 12, 2012 Posted by Barry

What:

Fresh Air Experience raffle in support of the Telemark Junior Race and Biathlon Teams

The West Kelowna Canadian Tire has graciously agreed to allow the Telemark racing and biathlon teams to sell raffle tickets in front of their store on Sunday 16th, Saturday 22nd, and Sunday 23rd from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Why you should care:

Every athlete is expected to sell a minimum of one book of 10 raffle tickets before the Apple Loppet draw date.  Your parent committee executive has taken the initiative to organize these 3 dates to give you an opportunity to sell your tickets.

What you need to do:

Just show up!  Bring your tickets.  If you have not yet received your tickets, you will be able to pick them up when you arrive.  Athletes need to be in team colours.  Bring a chair if you want to sit.  Stay as long as you are able.  Note that this is “come and go” so you will not be held to a schedule, but please drop a quick note to Barryto indicate your intentions.

Background:

At the March 2012 parent meeting, the 2012/13 budget was approved requiring fundraising in the amount of $10,000 (about $200 per athlete) in order to fund this year’s race program.  The discussion was very specific in that fundraising was strongly preferred over fee increases or service cuts.  Our sponsor Fresh Air Experience stepped up in September and offered to support our efforts by donating an exceptional Nordic prize package for a raffle.  At the October 2012 parent meeting, it was agreed that we would undertake the raffle project, and that every athlete would be expected to take a minimum of one book of 10 tickets.  This is the best opportunity you will have this year to fulfill your fundraising obligation.  Click here for the flyer with details of the prizes.  Tickets are $5.00 ea.

Request for Feedback: Track Attack, JD, TR

Madeleine fighting up the “hill from down under” at Canmore this weekend

At the parent meeting last week, we agreed to take off-line a discussion about program categories, schedules, and fees. Can you please send me a private email with your requests, which I will collect and discuss with Coach Adam next week.  To summarize what I heard at the meeting:

– “JD is too big of a step from Jackrabbits, both in terms of time and money.”
– “I have kids in TR and in JD so I have to be at Telemark four days per week.”
– “My child wants to ski with his/her friends in TR1 but the cost is too high or I can’t commit to the additional days, so I will stick with JD.”
– “I need skis just for this year, until older sibling passes down some skis.”
– “What is Track Attack?”

Budgets and schedules are already set for the coming season.  In fact, we are already racing!  So no promises. But we promise to look at every request and try to find a way to accommodate you.  After all, we do this for the kids and we want them to have a good experience.

Several people asked “What is track attack?”  Following is a cut-and-past from the FAQ on this web page.  There were not enough registrations this year to run a Track Attack program, but there is still a chance that we offer one if we find 5 more athletes to register:

Team Structure (TA, JD, TR1, TR2)

“JD” is the junior development team.  Targeted at the 13 and under crowd, the JD practices focus on having fun in the snow, technique fundamentals, and developing a love for the sport.  JD team members are welcome to start racing whenever they feel ready, but racing is not a priority.  The JD team practices on Wednesday night and Saturday morning at Telemark.

“TA” is the Track Attack Group. This is basically very similar to the the Junior Development program but with these differences:

  • Track Attack will run mostly on Tuesdays and Saturdays but check the season schedule. So if you have a younger child in Jackrabbits then the JD is better schedule wise. But if you have an older child in the Telemark Racers groups which are on Tuesday and Thursday then TA will work out better.
  • The schedule sessions is smaller for Track Attack than Junior Development.
  • The Track Attack is led by young coaches and JD is led by the club head coach, Adam Elliot.

“TR” is the Telemark Racing team.  Group “1? are athletes who are still developing technique, strength, and stamina.  Group “2? are athletes who have proven to be competitive at a high level and are expected to race at a Provincial or National level.  Group “2? athletes tend to train longer and more frequently and participate in more races, otherwise the training and practice programs and team expectations are identical.  All “TR” team members are expected to race as directed by the head coach.
