2021/22 Telemark Biathlon Programs

All prices quoted below are 2021/22 prices. Note that program capacities are limited based on availability of coaches and biathlon rifles.

Biathlon Bears-Jackrabbit (10-12 yrs) – $280

Biathlon Bears-Jackrabbit is a biathlon skills development program in conjunction with the Jackrabbit ski league. It is aimed at Bears who are comfortable on skis, but not yet ready for racing. Biathlon Bears-Jackrabbit participants learn to ski through games and activities with Telemark’s Jackrabbit Ski League, and participate in biathlon shooting practices alongside Biathlon Bears-Track Attack. This program is run by qualified volunteer coaches and runs from December to March on Tuesday evenings and Saturday (snow dependant). Sessions are lead by Biathlon Bears Coach (Antoine Bertrand NCCP#6427068). Rifles and ammunition are provided by the program.

Parents are encouraged to be active volunteers within the program. Telemark Nordic can provide coaching training. It is strongly encouraged (but not mandatory) for parents to obtain a Canadian Firearms Licence (PAL), over the course of the winter.

The goals of the Biathlon Bears-Jackrabbit program include:

  • Encourage FUN and participation in Nordic sports (biathlon and cross country skiing)
  • Develop ABC’s: Agility, Balance, Coordination
  • Encourage frequent cross-country skiing during the season.
  • Develop good ski technique (classic and skating) through repeated practice, utilization of games and ski playgrounds.
  • Develop fundamental biathlon marksmanship skills.
  • Develop linear, lateral and multidirectional speed.
  • Nurture a team/social atmosphere.
  • Introduce competition in a games based environment.

Program Requirements

  • Telemark Nordic Ski Pass and registration in Jackrabbit U12 Ski League
  • Biathlon British Columbia Membership
    • Select “$10 Biathlon Bears” under “Biathlon Canada Base Fees”
    • Select “$20 Recreational athlete” under British Columbia Fee Adjustment”
  • Ski equipment

Biathlon Bears-Track Attack (U12) – $400

Biathlon Bears-Track Attack is the natural progression from Biathlon Bears-Jackrabbit for young biathletes who are still building skills, but show a greater interest in the sport of biathlon. Biathlon Bears Track-Attack is integrated with Telemark’s Track Attack program and encompasses the Learn to Train Stage of physical development. The program is run by qualified paid and volunteer coaches under the supervision of Telemark’s Head Biathlon Coach (Chris Halldorson NCCP# 1074324) and Head Coach (Adam Elliott NCCP#984975). Sessions are lead by Biathlon Bears Coach (Antoine Bertrand NCCP#6427068) and Track Attack Coach (Alex McDonald NCCP# 5654059). The program runs from September to March on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays. Ski development is conducted as part of the Track Attack program, while biathlon shooting practices are conducted alongside Biathlon-Bears-Jackrabbit. Rifles and ammunition are provided by the program.

Parents are encouraged to be active volunteers within the program. Telemark Nordic can provide coaching training. It is strongly encouraged for parents to obtain a Canadian Firearms Licence (PAL), over the course of the winter.

The goals of the Biathlon Bears-Trak Attack program include:

  • Encourage FUN and participation in Nordic sports (biathlon and cross country skiing).
  • Improve shooting and ski technique through drills and careful input from qualified coaches
  • Develop fitness, speed and skill through repeated practice, utilization of games, relays, racing and terrain parks. Begin building fitness in the fall, prior to the snow season.
  • Learn how to ski (classic and skate) safely in a wide variety of conditions and terrain.
  • Continue to develop fundamental biathlon marksmanship skills.
  • Nurture a team/social atmosphere.
  • Learn to race with confidence.
  • Encourage competition in a team environment at the BC Biathlon Bears Championships, BC Track Attack Championships and BC Cup level.

  • Telemark Nordic Ski Pass and registration in Track Attack Biathlon Bears
  • Biathlon British Columbia Membership
    • Select “$10 Biathlon Bears” under “Biathlon Canada Base Fees”
    • Select “$20 Recreational athlete” under British Columbia Fee Adjustment”
  • Ski equipment

Biathlon – Train to Train (U14 & U16) – $825

The Biathlon T2T program is designed for athletes in the Train to Train (T2T) stage of physical development. It is a competitive program for athletes who have completed the Biathlon Bears-Track Attack program and/or are interested in committing to training and racing. Participation in Biathlon Development is in conjunction with Telemark’s Train to Train Nordic race program. The program is run by qualified paid and volunteer coaches under the supervision of Telemark’s Head Biathlon Coach (Chris Halldorson NCCP# 1074324) and Head Coach (Adam Elliott NCCP#984975). The program has an optional summer component, and regular practices are scheduled from September to March on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Biathlon rifles and ammunition are not provided in this program. Telemark Biathlon has biathlon rifles for rent on a limited basis.

Parents are encouraged to be active volunteers within the program. Telemark Nordic can provide coaching training. Parents should strive to obtain a Canadian Firearms Licence (PAL), over the course of the winter.

The goals of the Biathlon development program include:

  • Development of overall fitness, skiing and shooting specific skills.
  • Focus the development of aerobic training in order to build a base.
  • Develop sound skiing technique (skate and classic)
  • Foster a strong sense of team.
  • Introduce dryland (offseason) training
  • Compete on the BC Cup race circuit and attend BC Championships.

Program Requirements

  • Telemark Nordic Ski Pass
  • Registration in the Train to Train Biathlon Program
  • Biathlon British Columbia Membership
    • Select “$40 Junior Girls/Boys” under “Biathlon Canada Base Fees”
    • Select “$40 Athlete (Jr B/G and younger)” under British Columbia Fee Adjustment”
  • Canadian Firearms Minor’s Permit for the Athlete
  • Ski and shooting equipment

Biathlon – Learn to Compete (U18 & U20) – $1300

The Biathlon Advanced program is designed for athletes in the Learn to Compete  (L2C) stage of physical development. It is a competitive program for athletes who have completed the Biathlon Development program and/or are interested in committing to training and racing. Participation in Biathlon Advanced is in conjunction with Telemark’s Learn to Compete Nordic race program. Athletes in this program train year round and compete regularly. The program is run by qualified paid and volunteer coaches under the supervision of Telemark’s Head Biathlon Coach (Chris Halldorson NCCP# 1074324) and Head Coach (Adam Elliott NCCP#984975). Regular practices are scheduled from May to March on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Biathlon rifles and ammunition are not provided in this program and athletes are strongly suggested to purchase their own. Telemark Biathlon has biathlon rifles for rent on a limited basis.

Parents are encouraged to be active volunteers within the program. Telemark Nordic can provide coaching training. Parents should strive to obtain a Canadian Firearms Licence (PAL), over the course of the winter.

The goals of the Biathlon Advanced program include:

  • Continued development of overall fitness, skiing and shooting specific skills.
  • Introduction on advanced training methods.
  • Refinement of skiing (skate and classic) and shooting technique
  • Foster a strong sense of team.
  • Incorporate year round training.
  • Compete on the BC Cup race circuit, attend NorAms and the national championships.

Program Requirements

  • Telemark Nordic Ski Pass
  • Registration in the Learn to Compete Biathlon Program
  • Biathlon British Columbia Membership
    • Select your correct race category “$80 Senior Girls/Boys or Youth Men/Woman etc” under “Biathlon Canada Base Fees”
    • Select “$40 Athlete (Sr B/G and older)” under British Columbia Fee Adjustment”
  • Canadian Firearms Minor’s Permit for the athlete
  • Ski and shooting equipment

Biathlon recreation 16+ – $400

The Biathlon Recreation 16+ runs from Dec-March and is led by volunteer coaches. The focus is on participation and being “Active for Life.” Practices are based on skill development through drills and informal competitions. Participants must supply their own biathlon rifle and ammunition. Rifle rentals are available on a limited basis.

      • Select “$20 Recreational Athletes” under British Columbia Fee Adjustment”

  • Valid Canadian Firearms Licence/Minor’s Permit

Cadet Biathlon Program (not currently offered)

Cadets is a national program for youth ages 12-18. This program is open to any athlete who is part of an active cadet squadron/corps which currently has, or wants to start, a biathlon team. It is run as a civilian program using civilian Telemark Biathlon coaches and is designed to prepare cadets to compete in the zone, provincial and national cadet biathlon race series. This is a civilian program designed to teach the skills necessary to compete in the cadet biathlon race series. The club will work alongside the squadrons/corps to integrate cadet rifles into the program once they have been issued to the units, however it will be up to the units/corps to register the cadets in the zone race.  A cadet does not need to race in order to participate in this program. Participating youth must be a member of a Cadet Unit (air/army/sea).    This program normally begins in October and ends with the zone race at the end of December.  If interested, contact Telemark Biathlon Program Coordinator directly.

Para Biathlon Program (not currently offered)

This program encourages and welcomes athletes with a variety of disabilities. By using laser rifles or air rifles, athletes are able to participate in biathlon at both a recreational or competitive level. We have athletes able to act as guide skiers for sight impaired, as well as coaches and parents able and willing to work with athletes with other disabilities. Contact Telemark Biathlon Program Coordinator if interested.
